Recreate Lady Gaga Fashion Affordably

Posted by GuestBloggr on July 29, 2010

Lady Gaga has monopolized fashion blogs and media for the past two years with no end in sight. Face it, she’s fascinating. “Little monsters” and haters alike can’t help but talk about her ridiculous costumes and astounding lack of any inhibition whatsoever. Her style and popularity brings about a new age in fashion, one where sexy is not necessarily skimpy. True, Lady Gaga is also known for her frequent near-nudity, but this is only one of her many looks. She is the only one who can get away with wearing a coat of Kermits and a translucent bubble suit within the same year.  At the risk of quoting Glee, it is her theatricality that defines her, not how much skin she shows. Thus, clothing has become a form of self-expression and not a mating ritual, making the Gaga style universally easy to recreate.

Many designers are riding this new wave of atypical designs. Unexpected patterns, cuts and fabrics are flooding fashion websites and integrating the DIY-thrift store genre into high fashion.  Designer bikinis and one piece suits can now be found with high waists, ruffles and creative cut-outs a la Gaga’s “Poker Face” video. Even more affordable designers are jumping on the bandwagon, bringing Gaga style to the masses. Some designers have actually produced Lady Gaga look-alike items. Her signature sunglasses, particularly the famous Versace ones from the cover of her first album and the “Just Dance” video, are hot items.

Used clothing stores like Buffalo Exchange, or even the Salvation Army, offer a wide variety of unique options for a relatively affordable price too. Those who prefer to dig even deeper can literally “do it themselves” by purchasing cheap t-shirts or leotards and cutting or embroidering them at home. The only real guideline when going Gaga is bold detail; the rest is completely up to the wearer. You like daisies? Or surfing? Incorporate it into your outfit! The world is your oyster.

Product placement aside, Lady Gaga has done a lot of work to promote new forms of fashion gear altogether. Recognizing the rise of headphones as a fashion statement, Monster Headphones, who co-produced the high performance quality Beats by Dre, released a sister product called Heartbeats by Lady Gaga in 2009. Heartbeats are diamond-shaped in-the-ear headphones, also high performance, that come in red, white and black. In an attempt to make safe sex seem trendier, she has also publicly supported the use of Jeremy Scott’s line of designer condoms. These come in pink, orange and green animal prints.

Lady Gaga is profoundly shifting the world’s concept of what is sexy. Even veteran divas like Rihanna and Christina Aguilera are reevaluating how they display themselves in order to live up to the new Gaga standard, those who aren’t stepping up to the plate are slowly drift into has-been-dom. When some of the biggest fashion icons of the decade are running scared (or fighting fire with fire), you know she’s got to be doing something right. So why not do it too, especially when it’s so cheap and easy?

Lady Gaga fashion is one of the most popular nowadays. Many ladies actually look forward for her attire and even that hair-do. Well, I must admit that she has that unique fashion sense that appeals the public eye.

So what I’m hearing here is that Lady Gaga is making other female performers “have to” wear less clothes to keep up with her trend setting style? I like Lady Gaga, I think she is fun but her style is her style, I hope others don’t try to copy her. It couldn’t hurt to reinvent themselves but don’t cut and paste.

I don’t think that other performers are trying to be just like Lady Gaga, Jay, but that many other female performers who were previously the “face” of sexy are reassessing their previous methods to keep up with the *standard* that Lady Gaga has set.
Since LadyGaga is “upping the ante”, it means that others have to be willing to do the same too, in their own ways. I completely agree that they shouldn’t try to copy her and I doubt they would get away with it without a lot of criticism.
