Unique Looks Make Celebrities Famous

Famous celebrities don’t all have the perfect faces and figures. In fact, many celebrities are more memorable because of their imperfections. Jennifer Grey, the petite female lead in Dirty Dancing, was a crowd pleaser despite her obviously large beak, however her overly publicized nose job changed her from celebrity to anonymous overnight. For those who don’t change a thing, their popularity can skyrocket.

A smile is the first impression gained from meeting a person for the first time, and if that smile is riddled with jagged and yellow teeth, it can become the only impression. Yet many celebrities can easily get away with using the teeth God gave them and become some of the most well known and loved stars across the globe.

“Whether celebrities like it or not, if their teeth display unique characteristics that stand out–they often become trademarks,” Dr. Dan Matthews, a cosmetic dentist in Austin comments.  “In particular, if the uniqueness of the teeth isn’t of a positive nature, it is even more conspicuous.”
Steve Buscemi is the best known actor to have made his borderline scary smile into a gold mine, using it as comic relief assistance in recent films such as Grown Ups, I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry, and other related Adam Sandler films. On the flip side, Steve’s chompers have lent to his often paranoid and sometimes sleazy characters as Carl Showalter in Fargo and Ray Coleman, Vince Vaughn’s partner in crime in Domestic Disturbance.

Another actor that is well known not only for his fantastic acting but also for his colliding incisors is the cuddly yet deadly Morgan Freeman. His interesting smile actually gives him an edge in his acting career, allowing him to play both calm and comical characters such as God in Bruce Almighty and the collected criminal such as ‘Red’ Redding in Shawshank Redemption.

There are plenty of other celebrities out there who have become famous despite their not so pearly whites. Kelis, a singer made famous from her hit single “Milkshake” in August 2003, is depicted in some photos showing off her gold tooth bling, not unlike her hip hop and rap counterparts such as Nelly, Jay-Z, and many others. Madonna, the diva that shaped modern pop music of the 80’s and 90’s, sports a noticeable gap between her front teeth and shows some yellowing, but it doesn’t keep this material girl from expressing herself.

Many celebrities however opt to fix any major issues they are having with their teeth once they make the big bucks, whether it be purely cosmetic or due to actual pain and mouth issues. Tom Cruise for example did not always sport the classic movie star sparkle when he smiled. Back in his Outsider days, Cruise had a chipped front tooth and discoloration. Famous rap artist 50 Cent changed his yellowing and white capped teeth out completely for a symmetrical grin that makes girls swoon. American Idol winner Elliott Yamin smartly used his winnings from the show to rid himself of his awkward teeth placement by adding porcelain veneers. Catherine Zeta-Jones, Nicole Kidman, Keith Urban, Zac Efron, and Nicolas Cage are among the hundreds of celebrities that have taken advantage of their dental plans to create smiles fit for the red carpet.

Whether you’re the star of Fargo or an average Joe, it is still important to keep your teeth healthy and in good working order. Dr. Andrew Hall, a dentist in Colorado Springs, says, “Regardless of fame, it is a good idea for people to keep their teeth healthy. Maybe they don’t need to look perfect, but you only have one set of teeth to span your lifetime, so it’s a good idea to treat them nicely.” Taking care of yourself whether you have a couple bucks or a few million can take you far, just as plenty of these celebrities have done.
