We all know someone who looks to be in the best shape of their life, but they never seem to do anything to get there. They seem to eat what they want and don’t care about calories or dieting or the like. These people aren’t as special as they seem. They don’t have miracle genes or anything like that. What they do have is a series of habits and routines.
Here are 7 things fit people really do to stay in shape.
In This Post:
1. They Don’t Diet – In the Traditional Sense
Fit people never diet. For them, eating right is just part of their lifestyle. It’s who they are. The key to eating right is listening to your body. Think about the foods that leave you feeling good and feeling full. Think about the foods that really give you the energy you need to own a workout. Once you know the answers to those questions you can forge healthy eating habits and eat the right kinds of foods for you.
Note for beginners: If you are new to dieting we’d recommend to start with a food diary tracking system like Noom or Weight Watchers. At least for a few months. Over time you will become a better judge of how many calories a certain meal actually has and how many calories you are consuming throughout the days. But most people who start a diet are just not there yet, so using a food diary will definitely keep you on track.
There’s this great article that goes into the nitty gritty of Noom vs Weight Watchers, we suggest you give it a read.
2. They Really Do Enjoy Exercising
If you’re the kind of person who dreads the thought of hitting the treadmill then you need to change how you approach exercise and working out. The difference for fit people is that they do exercises they enjoy and they actually look forward to working out. Different people enjoy different things. Some people like sports, some people like HIIT, and others like CrossFit.
There’s nothing wrong with you if you don’t enjoy exercising. There’s something wrong with your program of choice. Find something that fits you and you like. They say if you love what you do you’ll never work a day in your life. The same can be said about exercise.
3. They Make Being Fit and Healthy a Priority
Many of us forego a workout because we get caught up in other things we consider more important. For fit people, being fit and healthy is important to them. Whether that means waking up earlier to work out, finding ways to work out on vacation, or fitting in a workout where others would consider it impossible, these people care about their fitness.
When you make exercise a priority, when you make it a habit, you’ll be surprised at how much you can do.
4. They Don’t Aim for Constant Perfection
There are definitely people who would never touch a carb in their life and seem okay with it. That takes a special kind of discipline that very few people have. We all need a little leeway and we all have to let ourselves be comfortable with the occasional mishap or cheat day.
You shouldn’t feel guilty if you give yourself a little treat. Everyone does. It only becomes a problem if you keep doing it. Maintain your habits and put in the work elsewhere and you can get away with the occasional snack.
5. They Sleep a Lot
There’s more to being fit than just working out. One of the most important things you can do to be healthy is sleeping. Sleeping gives you the energy that you need for working out of course, but it also helps with maintaining a healthy metabolism. Sleep also helps to repair muscles, promote better athletic performance, and so much more.
You should look to get up to eight hours of sleep each night. You’ll soon be fitter and healthier than you’ve ever been before.
6. They Make Fit Friends
Have you ever noticed that fit people tend to hang out with other fit people? If all your friends were eating fast food or always staying inside and doing other sedentary things, doesn’t it tempt you to also do the same thing? With friends like that you’re just as likely to sit around and not do much.
If you had friends that did a lot of cooking, ate with fresh ingredients, and played some soccer for a bit of random fun, it’s going to encourage you to do the same. You don’t necessarily have to cut unfit friends out of your life, but you can look to make new friends too and encourage your old friends to be a bit more active. Share the fitness.
7. They’re Just as Active Outside The Gym
Fit people look to make it a habit to go to the gym regularly and stay in shape, but they also look for opportunities to stay active outside of the gym. Here are some things you can do to make your life a more active one;
- Walk when you can
- Always take the stairs
- Stay active over the weekend with bike rides and walks
- Take an active vacation like hiking or swimming
- Move around more
The most important thing to remember with all of this is that you can do it. That’s the most important thing fit people do. They believe in themselves. They’ve got this. You’ve got this.
