Although the weather is not necessarily asking you to pull out your chunky sweaters and wool scarves yet, fall is just around the corner, so it’s time to start thinking about making a wardrobe transition.
As next season’s clothes start moving back into your wardrobe, so will accessories. You’ll need a pair of tights to wear under your summer dress, a pair of boots for rainy late-summer days or something to wear on your head in the evening.
To make transitioning from summer to fall easier and be sure your outfits are always looking perfect, here is a list of accessories you need to have in your closet now.

Structural boots
Shoe trends changed drastically in the past few seasons. We went from casual sneakers to delicate pumps so fast, it seemed designers can’t agree upon anything for once. Thankfully, this year all the great minds of fashion assented with one another and decided knee-gazing black boots will be the go-to shoes this fall. Platform or no platform, Saint Laurent, Rick Owens and Balenciaga all choose to have knee-high boots in their fall shows.
The best part about knee-gazing boots is they go perfect with summer dresses, so there is no reason to not include then in your wardrobe starting now. Perfect for rainy, windy late-summer outfits, a pair of black boots should not miss from your wardrobe year-long.
Aviator sunglasses
Aviator sunglasses are simply timeless. They go with almost any outfit, no matter the occasion or season. Even though any pair of aviator sunglasses should be perfect for accessorizing all your summer to fall outfits, we think a brown or golden-shaded pair works best with the overall late summer vibe. One good example is the Ray-Ban Aviator RB3025 at EyeOns, which come in a variety of color combinations.
The full rim metal frame makes these glasses easily suited for casual and formal events alike, so if there’s one pair of sunglasses, you should invest in, here you have it. The aviator sunglasses appeared nearly 100 years ago, in 1929, and have been a timeless piece ever since.
Soft clutches
Bottega Veneta started this soft cutch mania when they launched the Pouch clutch, so it was only a matter of time until other designers followed the trend. Handheld bags, created out of soft materials such as velvet, silk and leather will be all over the runways this fall, so why not take on the trend earlier?
If you don’t know where to shop for a perfectly designed soft clutch, we have a few favorites to recommend. Proenza Schouler, Khaite, Chanel, Prada, and, of course, Bottega Veneta, are our top picks, but Loewe and Miu Miu have some beautiful pieces worth checking out as well.
Neckties
This year, we are witnessing the most masculine accessory of them all making its way into ladies’ wardrobes as well. Neckties, the go-to accessory for every suit out there received a feminine spin and stole the show when the Gucci, Dior and Dolce & Gabbana collections came out.
Pair a slim necktie with a delicate, white, silk blouse and a skirt suit with an oversized blazer for a look inspired by Chanel, or go with a masculine, oversized pantsuit and a large tie, and you’ll be right out of the Rokh fashion show. Blazer or no blazer, women need to wear neckties more often!
Patterned tights
Tights were never necessarily a fashion item, but that’s about to change fast. Chanel ensured tights will be on everyone’s shopping list this summer to fall when they sent their models on the runway wearing CC emblazoned tights.
Just like Chanel leggings had a moment this spring, these branded tights will surely follow as women look for something to pair with their late-summer dresses. Other brands were quick to launch their own monogrammed tights, with Gucci and Fendi both coming up with a variety of models to choose from.
However, if you don’t want to spend a fortune on a pair of tights, then any other patterned tights will do the trick.
Detachable collars
Frill-collar blouses have been very popular these past few seasons, and they will continue to be just as popular this fall, but until the weather calls for thicker materials, you can emulate the feeling by accessorizing your outfit with a detachable collar.
A collar that ties at the front can be paired with a multitude of outfits, including denim overalls, simple, structural dresses, or just a blazer with for a more daring style option. The most popular detachable collars this autumn come from Ganni, a brand based in Copenhagen, which stole out hearts with its frill-collar blouses last spring.
Headscarves
One trend that seems to be making a big comeback from the 60s and 70s are silk headscarves. Perfect for a bad hair day or for accessorizing a simple, white summer dress, headscarves should be making their way into your wardrobe as well.
Dior revamped this trend when it sent its models on the runway wearing headscarves in a variety of prints and colors. The most recognizable, of course, was the brand’s monogram print, which looks perfect in shades of brown, burgundy or navy.
If you are not a fan of Dior, then Gucci’s hippie colors or Burberry’s monkey print may be more suited for your style. Be sure to check them out.
Bucket bags
Another trend making a comeback are bucket bags, which can be perfectly paired with both summer and fall outfits. Even though they have not entirely gone out of style, they now seem to be seen more and more on the runways and fashion streets.
Chanel has some beautiful, structural options that are bound to become timeless, while Louis Vuitton features some softer and more delicate silhouettes. No matter which models you choose, or which color goes best with your wardrobe, you are sure to be wearing bucket bags this summer, autumn, and many more seasons to come.
