Winter has arrived and the temperatures have dropped – but that doesn’t mean your fashion game has to as well. The seasonal chills may make you want to roll up in a blanket and avoid all social interactions this year – but fear not! Here are a few simple guidelines to help you look like a cozy, snug, fashion goddess.
The simplest trick in the book – layering. It’s a massively practical way to dress when it’s cold. Sometimes even the items in your wardrobe that you always depend on (everything from your favorite jeans to cashmere sweaters) no longer make the cut. That’s when you have to get creative and find ways to layer your clothes to create some new looks.
You can, for instance, layer cropped jackets and sweaters over anything; tee-shirts, dresses, leotards, etc. adding that extra volume to your outfit. Another way to layer is to dig out the mini-skirts from your summer closet and pair them with tights. Top it off with a snug sweater and you’ll be good to go.
Where possible, you can also sneak in arm-warmers and leg-warmers which will (surprise surprise) protect your limbs from the cold. They can be layered under maxi winter coats and those bell bottom pants you can’t seem to stay away from. Corsets and tights can function similarly by sticking to you like a second skin (something we could really use in the awful cold).
Be it your boyfriend’s hoodie or that trendy blanket scarf everyone’s wearing, this winter is all about letting loose. It’s the sneakiest way to look like you don’t care how you look while simultaneously looking chic and effortless. Think Kim Kardashian or Rihanna.
However, it’s always a good idea to play with sizes in your outfit; wear your baggie hoodie over tight skinnies, or wear a straight jacket to go with your trendy culottes.
Bonus point: the added fabric will bring that extra warmth that one can never get enough of.
Granted, winters can get a little dreary and dull. That’s where your accessories come in. Hats, scarves and gloves are the gems of winter. Be it a chic beret, a drooping beanie or a retro fedora, a nice hat will save your ears from the cool breeze and help you look spot on. New additions like blanket scarves, hooded scarves, and invisible socks are all the craze this winter.
More good news for the bling addicts: the cinched waist of the 40s is back with a bang. Tighten up your waist with a minimalist belt, or funk it up with a bright scarf to channel your inner Audrey Hepburn. It adds flattering curves to almost any kind of coat, while adding life to the stiff garment.
If you’re a minimalist then just sit back and let your boots do the talking. High boots look great with skinnies and add a snug layer to your legs. Want to flaunt your ankle boots instead? No problem. Simply pair them up with cuffed jeans or a rocking power suit to complete your look.
Last piece of advice: avoid flashy neons, over layering, and over bling-ing it. Winters are all about playing it cool (pun intended). Seriously though – go for neutral colors, play with monochromes and don’t be afraid to experiment with patterns.
Remember that there’s no fatal move with your winter outfit. It’s like assembling a puzzle – except any piece you don’t like can be changed so that your finished look is something that you are comfortable with. Feel gorgeous, look gorgeous. Happy wearing! 🙂
