The new year is quickly approaching and soon the dancers will be lining up to perform in venues across the world. The dance costume designers have been busy with their new creations. While it is hard to nail down one color as the color of the year, we believe we have done it and did it well.
The collections of 2017 featured a lot of bold colors. Look for softer and more romantic colors for 2018. The hot color for 2018 is Dusty Rose.
2017 held tight to the rose gold trend. Cell phones, jewelry, and women’s clothes all laid claim to the color sensation. Dance costumes followed suit to a degree. However, dance pro, Alexandra Costumes have honed in on Dusty Rose for the coming year.
Benefits of the trending color
Dusty Rose is a very feminine color. It softens the skin with its barely there hue of pink. Dusty Rose compliments the nude color pallet that dancers support creating an understated and chic look on the formal dance stage.
Dusty Rose is a neutral color that can be enhanced with metallic colors like gold, silver, bronze, and gun-metal blue. For a more dramatic look, costumes can be trimmed with navy blue or black.
In 2018 you will see more of the 1990’s styles of dance costumes. This is where you will find royal purple, red, coral, and hot pink. Watch for mid-drift shirts, leggings, and bright colored jackets, with matching shoes, of course. The yesteryear look will be a hot trend in hip-hop circles.
Modern dance will be all about romance this year. Beauty and softness will be center stage. You will see a lot of Tribal designs in this genre.
Leotards will be anything but boring. Look for designs with a mock collar, fabric that gives the illusion of the deep neckline. Colors to watch for are, deep olive greens, smoky gray, and camel. You will also see a lot of “cold shoulder” cuts with turtleneck or crew neck leotards.
Open front skirts are big in 2018. They provide a little coverage on the backside while leaving the front open. This look is sexy, yet modest. Combined with the correct leotard, it is stunning, to say the least.
Jazz and contemporary costume trends
MESH! It is mesh, everywhere you look. Mesh with huge floral designs, mesh with tribal designs and mesh overlays. It is all about romance and illusion. Mesh adds some texture to your dance costume, and gives the illusion of coverage with a daring look closer feel.
This year’s dancers will appreciate the creativity, colors, and cut that the designers have chosen to produce.
While there are always trends that are embraced in this industry, there are always the stand-by traditional dance costumes and dance shoes. A great dancer can wear any costume and make it look beautiful. However, for costumes that enhance the performance and allows the dancer to display her art while being supported by her wardrobe, she should invest in some basic pieces in trending cut and color.
2018 promises to be a wonderful year for the inspiring dancer. We are all looking ahead to a bright and beautiful year in the world of dance.
