Eating Green: Benefits of a Vegetarian Diet

Benefits of a Vegetarian Diet

Going vegetarian is an easy way to begin living a healthy lifestyle. A few simple diet changes can solve many health related medical issues. Instead of the typical American diet, vegetarians eat a wide variety of healthy fruits, vegetables, and grains. Lacto-Ovo vegetarians eat dairy products and eggs, while vegan lifestyle vegetarians don’t eat meat, eggs, or dairy products. Here are some of the benefits of a vegetarian diet.

Vegetarians are Slimmer

Vegetarians who eat a healthy diet lose weight quicker than meat eaters. Vegetarians are also more likely to keep the weight off once it’s gone. A healthy vegetarian diet is naturally low in fat, while meat and dairy products are very high in calories and saturated fats. This means you can fill your plate with nutrient dense fruits and vegetables and still maintain a healthy weight.

Vegetarians Live Longer

Meats are very high in artery-clogging cholesterol, and saturated fats. The average American diet consists of ten pounds of meat or more each week. Cutting this out of your diet completely reduces your risk of high blood pressure and heart disease, which is the leading cause of death in the United States.

Vegetarians have a Reduced Risk of Food Borne Toxins

Eating lower on the food chain reduces your exposure to harmful chemicals. Farm animals are fed increasing amounts of antibiotics and other medicines to keep them from getting sick in dirty, crowded conditions. Choosing organic vegetables often further reduces your risk.

Vegetarians Have More Energy

Heavy foods high in saturated fats take longer to digest. Undigested food sitting in your stomach will slow down your energy absorption, and your immune function. For maximum energy outputs, opt for high protein, low fat choices like legumes, whole grains, and eggs.

Vegetarians are Saving the Planet

It’s true! Raising grains and vegetables for human consumption is much less intensive than raising grains for animals that will be eaten by humans. 70 percent of all the grain grown in the United States is grown in order to feed farm animals. Eating less meat allows that land to be preserved or used for less intensive purposes.
