We’ve all looked at our favorite celebrities on the red carpet with envy, knowing that they have a team of stylists on hand to attend to their hair, makeup, and wardrobe, not to mention a slate of designers jockeying to send over their latest creations for the exposure they can garner when the celebrities wear their garments. And then there is the outrageously expensive jewelry that they get on loan. While you certainly don’t have access to these same resources, it doesn’t mean you can’t have your own celeb-inspired, red carpet moment when you attend a major event. And here are just a few tips to help you get glam in the style of your favorite starlets.

In order to have the best success with your glam project, you need to get a head start; this means setting up appointments well ahead of time to ensure that you can get all of the services needed to help you look your best on your special night. Call ahead to make sure that you can get day-of appointments for makeup and hair, but schedule the prep work, as well. Meet with your hair stylist a few days before to show her the look you’re going for. This will give you an opportunity to get a cut and color done with time to spare for a redo if you end up hating it. You should also arrange for a facial a few days beforehand (so that your skin is flawless in time for your event) and schedule your mani-pedi for 1-2 days out.
Hit the salon.
While you can certainly do your own hair, it couldn’t hurt to have a little help when it comes to getting your tresses red-carpet ready. Scour the internet for a few celebrity hairstyles you love and then let your stylist help you pick the one that best suits you. Whether you opt to go all out with a major cut and color or you simply need some help securing an updo, a trip to the salon can make you feel like a million bucks.
Get a custom gown.
You don’t have to get haute couture in order to emulate celebrities. If there is a gown you like you can simply look for something similar online or at department stores. Or if you really want one of the hottest looks from the most recent award show or celebrity gala, simply take photos to your local tailor or seamstress to have a replica made in your size (call alterations shops to see if they will make garments from scratch). It will likely cost you a bit more than ready-to-wear items found in clothing stores, but it’s worth the extra expense for a custom gown that fits you perfectly.
Go for a makeup makeover.
Ditch the everyday stuff and head to your favorite makeup counter for a makeover. Go ahead and splurge on good foundation, powder, and blush (Clinique offers a slew of great products for less than competitors like Chanel or Bobbi Brown) but have the sales associate take your photo so that you can head to the pharmacy to get comparable colors of lipstick and eye shadow for less. And use a good primer to keep your face looking fresh all night.
Find some sparklers.
We’re not talking about fireworks (although that’s what you’ll create when you walk the red carpet on your way to ballrooms in San Antonio, Seattle, New York City, or wherever you happen to be attending your shindig). No, what you need is some truly fantastic jewelry to complete your look. And cubic zirconia could just be your best friend, especially considering how many celebrity looks inspire faux replicas after red carpet events.
