When you are ready to hire a professional to capture your wedding, the more educated you are about the photographer, the better. Here are a list of questions that you should ask before hiring someone.
Are you available on date?
This should be the very first question to ask. If they are not available on your date, it doesn’t matter how they would answer the following questions. Plus, if you fall in love with them and their style, you may feel like the photographer you hire is your second choice. You want to feel like you’ve hired the best person for your day.
How long have you been in business?
This is a good question because you can get a feel for their level of experience and how successful they are. If they have been in business for many years, you will easily find reviews about them. If you can’t, they may not be truthful with their years of experience.
Ask for a portfolio?
They should be proud to show off their portfolio. This is a great way of learning their style, editing skills, and creativity.
How many photographers will be there?
You will want more than one photographer. Extra photographers will be able to catch each moment from a different angle. This also covers a shot that one photographer doesn’t catch.
Ask for references.
With experience, comes references. They should be able to give you five references. These couples will be able to tell you their experience before the wedding, during the wedding, the experience getting the photos afterwards.
Do they have extra equipment?
Sometimes things get broken. Maybe the photographer or videographer dropped the camera. Maybe a rowdy guests accidentally knocks it out of their hands. Extra equipment is important.
Are there travel fees?
You can rack up quite the bill with travel expenses.
Did they book more than one event that day?
It’s important to know their schedule. If they have a shoot scheduled earlier in the day, have they scheduled enough time in case something happens?
Do they offer a discount for engagement photos?
Some photographers will add a discount or free engagement photos into their wedding package. This could save you money, which is always great.
Have they ever photographed this location before?
If they have, that’s great. They will already be familiar with places to get good shots. Also, you will be able to see how that location looks with them as the photographer.
What happens if the wedding lasts longer than expected?
Most of the time there are fees associated with extra time. Be sure to find out what those fees are. Also, be sure that they are willing to stay later.
How long will it take to get proofs?
After the wedding you will be so excited to get your pictures back. You should find out how long it takes for you to be able to view the proofs.
What is their cancellation policy?
Sometimes weddings get cancelled or rescheduled. A natural disaster could happen or a death in the family. There are many things that could happen to cause a wedding to be cancelled. You should know what the fees are and if you will get a refund.
Hiring someone to capture the moments of your big day can be stressful. It is important to ask all of the right questions, so that you can hire the best person to handle your wedding.
