Coloured skinny jeans are all the rage this year for both men and women. But how do you wear them? For women, if worn incorrectly, they can emphasise problem areas and maybe even make you look a little bit boyish. For men, they can easily give the wrong impression and even be uncomfortable if sized too small.  So how do you rock skinny jeans?

Sizing Matters

First, most skinny jeans are about 1-2% spandex, this is more likely if they are women’s jeans, but not always true. If the jeans have spandex in them, men should be able to go up one or two sizes for additional comfort. Because of the spandex, they won’t fall off and will still hug the body without being overly tight.

For women, skinny jeans that contain spandex give women the opportunity to find a curve hugging pant that doesn’t cut down on mobility or etc. Try out with your size or a size up. While you can most likely fit into a size smaller due to the stretch, this isn’t really recommended because the fabric will be very tight and stretched which isn’t a stylish look.

Tops & Shirts

For girls, it’s important to wear the right top with skinny jeans. A plain t-shirt can often make you look a little boyish, but you don’t want to dress them up too much either. Go for colourful jeans with a black, white or grey top and aim for something that’s a little feminine. Batwing or dolmans, any flowing fabric or lacy materials are all great for this look. If you want to wear a t-shirt, try paring it with a cardigan and maybe even a lacy scarf to make the look a little more feminine.  You can accentuate your waist with high rise jeans if you don’t have too much in the way of hips and use low waist jeans if you want to de-emphasise your rear or accentuate your bust. For men, don’t worry, where your pants waist falls doesn’t really do much either way so this won’t be a consideration.

For men, anything from a t-shirt to a button down and blazer should look good with this look. If you’re wearing very colourful jeans, try to stick to a more neutral white or black shirt and remember that patterned shirts always go over well.

Shoes to Wear With Skinny Jeans

While women are well known for considering what shoes they wear, men aren’t so famous for it.

Women should try wearing heels, casual ankle sneakers like Converse or Van’s, or boots that can range from ankle high to above the knee. Most of the time women can’t go wrong with boots for a semi-casual to semi-formal look while sneakers will of course make the look very casual.

For men, stay away from anything too casual or that shows your feet. If you could walk on a beach with it or go running in it, it won’t look good with your skinny jeans.

The Colours to Choose

Unfortunately not all colours or colour combinations look good on everyone. While some women can get away with wearing an all burgundy outfit including jeans, others can’t. You really have to pay attention to your skin tone and decide what looks good on you, and this holds true whether you are male or female.  Fashionable colours for women right now include green, yellow and burgundy while fashion for men is more in the purple, green and blue range but it is important to try them on with something you would typically wear and make sure you look good in it.

Measurements

Last but not least, almost every brand of jeans has some size differences and you can’t always rely on the waist measurement. Even if the jeans say waist measurement of 28, they could mean that the waist measurement is where your natural waist would fall. Measure your hips, the smallest part of your waist and your inseam before you buy skinny jeans to make sure you get the perfect fit.

There are a lot of looks you can pull off with the right pair of skinny jeans. However, it is important to make sure that you are comfortable in them and they fit you well before you try to look good in your jeans.
