How to Choose the Right Shapewear

While shapewear often gets praises from a majority of the ladies that use it to feel more confident, quite many people criticize it for various reasons. There are those people who think of shapewear as torture devices that squeeze the user’s innards all in the name of beauty.

The reality, however, is that if you choose the right shapewear, you will feel more comfortable and in control, because that’s exactly what it’s made for. So if you have ever had a bad experience with shapewear, it’s more than likely the result of not choosing the right size or type for your body. To make it easier for you to get the best shapewear for your body, here is a handy guide:

In This Post:

  • Consider Your Size
  • Choose the Right Constriction
  • Identify Your Problem Areas
  • Choose the Material Wisely
  • Pick the Right Color

Consider Your Size

One of the most misleading thoughts that you can ever have is that you can size down for extra firmness and to look your best. Doing that, however, will only cause bulges and result in great discomfort and can in some cases make you look bigger. Instead of choosing a smaller size, try out the right size in a store to ensure that you feel comfortable whenever you have to use the shapewear.

Choose the Right Constriction

As far as the choice of constriction is concerned, what you should keep in mind is that the more nylon the shapewear contains, the more it will alter your shape. In addition, the thicker the material that has been used, the greater the alteration of your shape will be.

Thick, heavier pieces that have compression zones should be the most effective when it comes to sucking and tucking your body into shape. Lightweight shapewear, on the other hand, is meant for simply smoothing out targeted spots.

Identify Your Problem Areas

There are various shapewear options to consider depending on your trouble areas and the types of clothes that you plan to wear. Here are the main shapewear options and what they are good for:

  • Camisole: covers your torso and boobs areas for the impression of a smaller waist and flatter stomach.
  • Control briefs: high-waisted control briefs are good for shaping your stomach, hips rear, and the tops of your thighs. You should choose the rear-enhancing style that lifts your butt instead of flattening it.
  • Thigh shaper: these are worn like shorts, and they are a perfect choice if you want to firm up your waist and thighs.
  • Body shaper slips with padded cups: Ideal for wearing under bodycon dresses, body shaper slips are perfect for shaping your waist, derriere, and thighs.
  • Arm shapers: they are perfect for use if you have been neglecting your triceps dips, bicep curls, and chaturanga.

Before picking your shapewear, be sure to certify that it is meant for your trouble zones. That way, you will get the results that you are after with very little effort.

Choose the Material Wisely

The majority of shapewear manufacturers use nylon and spandex. However, these two fabrics are not the best as far as breathability is concerned. As such, shapewear that is made of nylon and spandex may be perfect for colder climates as you get to retain your body heat, but not in warmer climates where you are more prone to sweat.

The best shapewear if you live in a warmer region or you want to buy shapewear for summer, is the one made of cotton for breathability and moisture absorption, and microfiber for odor control.

Pick the Right Color

Even though you may be tempted to pick the brighter colors that are available at the store, it’s good to keep in mind that you will wear the shapewear under your clothes. For this reason, you should consider buying nude or skin color shapewear for a seamless look.

Choosing the right shapewear may seem like a challenging thing to do, but it’s not. All you have to do is go with the dimensions of your body and target the right areas to get the results that you expect. It goes without saying that you have to choose the right shapewear brand and product by reading reviews and taking your time to research through different information sources.

For the best results, it’s best if you can try out your shapewear at a store since that will give you a spot-on judgment of how it feels and what it looks like.
