Brad Pitt has confirmed his position as a style icon by becoming the latest face of a Chanel No. 5 advertisement campaign, and the first ever male face of this ad series. Brad Pill has received a reported $7 million for his work. Chanel is the epitome of all that is style and fashion. Its ad campaigns have previously featured stars such as Nicole Kidman, and Marilyn Monroe gave it eternal fame in stating that it was the only thing she ever wore to bed.

In choosing Mr. Pitt to star in the 30 second commercial, which has been a trending topic since its online debut on October 14th, Chanel was making a pointed decision to keep its image and the iconic perfume’s brand fresh and exciting. “And for the first time, the perspective of a man—Brad Pitt—on the most feminine fragrance of all time: Chanel No. 5” is how the press release proudly celebrates the choice of Mr. Pitt. In what can only be described as a slow, thoughtful, almost gravelly voice Brad Pitt has the look of a man with much life experience and wisdom. Touting lines such as “the world turns and we turn with it. Plans disappear, dreams take over. But wherever I go, there you are. My luck. My fate. My fortune” viewers might first think he was talking to a woman, a lover. Perhaps, it is a long lasting love that has stood the test of time, and continues to be adored by this man. However, as he wraps up with “Chanel No. 5, inevitable” it is clear he has instead been seduced by this timeless fragrance. The lines are perfect to create the sense of timelessness held by this classic fragrance, but Pitt’s deliberate delivery of the lines seems a bit odd.

To match his time tested sound and message, is his style of long hair, a rugged goatee, and a button down shirt that appears to be denim but is hard to tell since his appearance is filmed in black and white. The expected response of swoons and gushing over his good looks has been coupled with some criticism as to his appearance. Some have wondered why Chanel, a brand famous for couture and pearls, did not don Brad in the more expected black tuxedo to capture the dashing handsomeness in all of its glory. Others have gone so far as to say he looks dirty and scruffy.

While his looks are off-putting to some, there are still others who find the whole thing hilarious to watch and a bit hokey. Although he is the first male face of Chanel No. 5, the Chanel press release for this latest ad campaign compares him to the 1960s ads featuring Catherine Deneuve. Director Joe Wright (Pride and Prejudice, Atonement, and Anna Karenina) states, “When you have Deneuve or Pitt, why would you need to decorate that? It would be like gilding the lily. I wanted to create something incredibly simple and strong that really focused on the performance.” People have noticed his performance, but it is yet to see if the overall response will be positive or not. The commercial will first air on television October 21st and the print campaign will be seen in the November issues of magazines. Print ads were shot by Steven Klein.

Women love to receive perfume, especially from a man in love with them, and many women love Brad Pitt. And yet the marriage of the two may not be as perfect as the concept might seem. Chanel did something bold and new, but those willing to take risks do not always get the reward they hoped for.
