Call it downtime or even boredom. Time spent doing less means protecting your mind and body from the overwhelm of life’s stresses and strains. Can you even remember the last time you did that?
No one wants to be bored to tears and too much of one thing, like chocolate, is terrible for you. It turns out the same is true of boredom.
However, boredom can also be good for you, as it allows the mind to range on fresh topics and get creative. It provides a windbreak between your everyday thoughts and activities.
Try and plan for some periods which are not noisy or constructively employed. It might mean re-watching your favorite television series or cleaning out that cupboard that you have promised to do for the last three years.
Go Off the Grid
The final way to slow down is to unplug your tech. Maybe you can’t do that all the time, but just for short periods, you will be amazed at what a difference it makes.
Downtime should be offline time, too. Going off the grid doesn’t have to be anxiety-inducing. So much of the connectivity that social media has enabled over the past decade can lead to higher rates of anxiety, depression, stress, and overwork.
Instead of scrolling social media feeds, take up the passions and hobbies you once loved. Whether it’s reading, hiking, or listening to music, there are many ways where you can give your mind and soul a break from the busyness of the modern world.
Get active, do things slowly, and plan total downtime—make these three things your mantra for 2022 and see how your whole outlook can transform.
