So do you fancy a really bold and striking change of image? Perhaps never in your wildest dreams would you ever consider trying such an 80’s throwback look but let’s face it girls, everyone has a little geek in them so embrace it – don’t fight it!

Steal Zooey Deschanel’s Style
Getting the specs!
It pretty much goes without saying that the geeky look is practically impossible to achieve without a set of thick frames adorning your face. Whether or not you currently wear glasses is irrelevant. Nowadays, you can shop around online for frames and get zero strength lenses if you’re lucky enough to have 20/20 vision, or buy a new set for reading or as part of your prescription.
But the fact is, if you want the geek chic look, you have to wear trendy eyewear!
The key is, you need the correct style of frame to get this look right. Then everything follows from here on, and those frames must be thick and big. Nothing else will do!
Any compromises won’t work. Big frames that are thin will disappear on your face, small frames with thick rims will make your facial shape all wrong. Wide frames and thick rims is the only way to go ladies!
If you’re starting out on your journey towards geek pastiche, try a darker coloured frame to begin with. A black or dark brown with tortoise shell is the benchmark. You could try other colours but anything too bright will take you from geeky to garish. This look is about getting the right balance between understated and expressive – but never loud. That’s just way too seventies!
Once you have a pair that you feel works for your face, let’s move onto your next assets in your image arsenal. Your hair!
Styling your hair
Pairing up your hair with your frames is pretty vital. If you already have short hair then its time to let it grow and get some extensions put in. Short hair simply doesn’t work for this look.
If you’re fortunate enough to have gorgeous long flowing hair with plenty of body, then get a good hair stylist to cut in a fringe that meets your brow-line. You don’t necessarily want a fringe that is perfectly straight or cut like a bowl, but it must help to frame your face and add definition.
The geek chic hairstyle is very eighties influenced. A center parting with little body at the top of your head is a must. Only add volume as your hair passes your ears. To do this, separate your hair into sections and then wrap each of them around a curling iron in an outward direction. Set your hairstyle with a light hairspray, and separate the curls gently with your fingers so that the ringlets fall into a gorgeous, voluminous coiffure.
Think Charlie’s Angels or Wonder Women and you’ll not be too far away from the finished look you want.
Choosing an Outfit
Once your hair is ready, it’s all about the clothes. Fortunately, the geek chic look transcends many ages groups so it’s not just a look for the young, anyone can go geeky. Its never too late girls!
So when out shopping at the clothes store, look out for flowing, knee-length skirts and pair with patterned tucked in blouses, a good pair of tights and some colourful flats – never heels!
For special occasions, try a single coloured calf-length dress to compliment your eyes, and wear with a pair of trusty flats and tights for a sophisticated, intellectual image.
Always ensure your outfit compliments your frames. So if you’ve gone for a brown belt, ensure your frames are suitable to match. But if you do decide to introduce colour, let the clothes do that part. Never go crazy with colour on your frames. That will not achieve the desired look.
Ready to Geek Out?
It really is that easy to achieve the geek chic appeal. It’s a look that will certainly get attention for all the right reasons and give you that approachable, sophisticated and mysterious lo you’d always wanted.
The eighties are back with a bang and this look epitomizes the best of that generation.
