2. Air Moisture

Interior climate controlled air takes the moisture out. The air conditioner and heater in your home, office, and vehicle make the air temperature comfortable for you, but dries out exposed facial skin. Counteract the dry air by using a humidifier in the room where you spend most of your time to help replenish skin moisture.

3. Stay Away from Windows

The sunshine streaming in through a glass window feels wonderful on our skin, but is loaded with skin-damaging ultraviolet rays. Place your chair away from the window so the sun won’t shine directly on your face. 

Choosing an aisle seat on an airplane is especially important too. A window seat exposes skin to even more harmful UV rays due to the high altitude of the plane.

4. Year Round Sunscreen

Though one of the joys of retiring in California might be the warm weather and dry air, anytime your face is exposed to sunlight, even in the middle of winter, it’s also being exposed to harmful UV rays. Make it a habit to apply sunscreen under makeup or wear a makeup foundation that contains sunscreen to help slow down skin aging and protect against skin cancer.

5. Remove Makeup

All day your face is exposed to various pollutants that can clog pores and age skin. Remove makeup with a gentle cleanser each night so those pollutants are removed. Apply a thick, nighttime moisturizer after removing makeup as well.

6. Exercise

Regular exercise keeps skin looking younger by promoting good circulation and increasing the amount of nutrients which reach the skin. It doesn’t even have to be extremely strenuous to be useful. If you live in a retirement community, you can even join a low-impact exercise class like Tai-Chi or Yoga. Avoid making frowns, squints, or other facial expressions while exercising to help prevent deep-set lines from forming. Always wash your face after exercising to remove sweat residue.
