How To Tell The Difference Between A Fake And A Real Designer Purse

To avoid the twist and turn of emotions, you need to learn how to spot a real and fake designer bag. Here’s what to do.

1. Learn To Spot The Differences

A real designer bag will be manufactured by either a high-end or low-end designer. Remember, everything about the purse including the charms, logo or attachments are part of the original design including their positioning and the number of these features available. You can prove the designer’s authenticity by checking the signatures, tags and any other marks that reiterate the designer’s name. The price for a real designer bag might differ depending on what you are willing to pay for to acquire it.

There are legal knock-offs or imitation purses whose designs have been inspired by the designer but not a direct copy. Of course, these imitation purses shouldn’t claim to be the original design and doesn’t use the trademarked symbols, features or logos. The imitation purses can copy the style or colors of the real designer purse without using the defining features to avoid any copyright infringement issues. It will state the similarities to the original design but it will not claim to be the original.

Without proper inspection, you might assume these imitations are the real thing thus you will end up spending a lot of money thinking it’s the original. That’s why you need to learn to spot the differences. Don’t forget there are also fake bags that pass for being the original down to everything including the logo, tag or charms. These fakes will imitate everything about the real designer bag and pass for them without any effort to distinguish. These fakes are often sold for lower prices and they are actually illegal.

2. Selected Stores Where The Bags Are Sold

If you want to buy a designer bag, make sure you visit one of the selected stores where these bags are sold exclusively. Some of the selected stores have the same name as the designer brand or boutique stores. Any staff found in the selected stores should have the right information regarding the quality, pedigrees and the guarantees regarding the designer bag.

If you come across a designer bag being sold by a street vendor or at a flea market, your first assumption should be that it’s fake. On the other hand, if you are purchasing designer bags from estate sales, online auction sites or thrift stores, make sure you know everything about them. You can also ask trusted people in the fashion world about where they purchased their designer purses as long as you can trust them.

3. A Realistic Price

Always remember that designer bags are quite expensive because they are well-crafted. They are simply status symbols and that’s why they are highly priced. Therefore, if you find one being sold at a throw-away price, probably by a street vendor, then it’s a fake. You can buy one of the legal knock-offs but make sure you are not paying the high price tagged on the real designer purse. Of course, you need to check the quality of the legal knock-offs to make sure they are as good as the real thing.

4. Ask The Vendors

If you are not sure about the authenticity of a particular designer purse, you can ask the vendors whether they are selling a real, fake or a copy. You can go with your gut feeling when making the judgment about the answer provided. Remember, keep your emotions in check and always use your common sense when provided with the answers. If the vendors avoid answering the question, there is something to hide.

You can also ask the vendor if you are allowed to return the bag if you find it is fake or faulty. Of course, street vendors selling illegal knock-offs will not agree to this part.  Some bags might also have a certificate of authenticity so ask for it.

5. Look For The Signs

You need to know the signs of a knockoff or fake purse to determine the authenticity. Here are some of these signs that you should be on the lookout for.

a) The Stitching – If it is slanted, sloppy or uneven it is a sign that the purse is poorly made so it is a fake.

b) Tags And Labels – Are the tags hand-stitched or stamped into leather? If it is a fake purse, you will not find a name on the inside tag. You should also check the outside of the bag because many designers add authenticity labels on the outside.

c) The Material – If the bag is made out of leather, the smell should be that of leather. If it is made out of durable canvas, the purse should be strong and well-stitched. The real designer bags often have patterns inside while the fakes have one color throughout.

d) The Logo – If the logo is misspelled then it’s a knock-off. You need to be more careful with the logo because they leave out one letter or add one and it might be easy to miss.

e) Serial Number – The real designer purses have a serial number to prove authenticity. The fakes might have one too but if you look closely you will find that it’s in a different font than the original bag.

f) The Lining – Does the interior of the bag sound like paper rubbing together? It’s a fake because the real designer bag should be lined properly with leather. You can also check the stitching of the lining.

g) Color Variations – There might be some blatant variations but some might be quite subtle. Make sure you do a close inspection to notice the difference.

Finally, you can also check the zipper because the real bags have a logo on the underside of it. Remember, most of the high quality designers use the same high quality manufacturers for zippers so there shouldn’t be any variation.
